Every day is an opportunity to learn, grow and thrive
At Ashperton Primary Academy, we know that happy children learn best. Every school day brings new opportunities to learn, explore, make friends, build confidence and discover something new.
Good attendance is an important part of making the most of these opportunities. We understand that children do sometimes become unwell, and there will be occasions when they need to be at home. Our aim is to work positively with families to help every child attend school regularly and enjoy all that Ashperton has to offer.

Being in school every day helps our children to develop the curiosity, independence, resilience and confidence they need to become successful lifelong learners.
When should my child attend school?
If your child is well enough to take part in a normal school day, they should come to school.
If they are unwell, please use the NHS guidance (below) to help you decide whether they should stay at home. Please call the school to report an absence as close to the start of the day as possible or you can report it on Arbor. If you are unsure, please contact the school office and we will be happy to help
Remember
A minor cough or cold doesn't usually mean your child needs to stay at home.
If your child has a high temperature, they should remain at home until it has gone.

Every Day Counts
Attendance is more than a percentage on a report.
Every day in school represents opportunities for learning, friendships, experiences and memories.
Even small amounts of missed school can add up over time. This is particularly important when children are repeatedly late, as arriving after the school day has begun means missing valuable learning.
Every minute matters. Every day counts.
Being on time
We want every child to start their day feeling calm, settled and ready to learn.
Arriving on time means your child can:
- Begin the day with their classmates
- Hear important information and instructions
- Take part fully in morning learning
- Settle into the school day confidently
- Make the most of every learning opportunity
If your child arrives late, please bring them to the main reception where you are able to sign them in.
The school day starts at 8.40am with registration at 8.55am.
This diagram shows how the number of minutes late can affect the number of hours lost in learning. Simply being 5 minutes late every day of the academic year means 15 hours lost. Every minute in school is utilised, and this is from the very moment the children enter the school building:
Term-time absence
We understand that families sometimes face exceptional circumstances where a child may need to be absent during term time.
Requests for term-time absence should be made to the school office in advance by filling in the form below. Please provide as much information as possible about the circumstances surrounding your request.
Each request will be considered in accordance with the school's attendance policy and current government guidance.
Our approach
At Ashperton, attendance is about more than numbers.
We want every child to feel that school is a happy, safe and welcoming place where they belong.
Our staff work closely with children and families when attendance becomes a concern. We will always aim to understand the reasons behind absence and work together to find the right support.
