Packed Lunches - important information

We currently have children in school who have nut allergies. People who suffer from nut allergies can develop a severe, potentially life-threatening allergic reaction. If someone has a nut allergy it is not just eating nuts that can cause a severe reaction, just being touched on the skin or smelling the breath of someone who has had nuts or a product containing nuts can trigger anaphylactic shock (which can cause breathing and swallowing difficulties). First aid staff in the school are trained to use the Epi-pens (an injection of adrenalin) which is required immediately if this happens. We cannot have nuts in school in any form.

So please can we ask that you have no nut products in the lunch boxes or brought into the school as treats.

For example:

Peanut butter sandwiches, chocolate spreads, cereal bars some granola bars, cakes that contain nuts, biscuits / cookies that contain nuts, peanut butter cakes, pesto, satay sauce.

This list is not exhaustive, so please check the packaging of products closely. We appreciate that this is an additional thing to check but we know that you recognise the importance of it.

We do have to insist we are a nut free school as it is a life-threatening condition.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to speak to a member of staff.

Free School Meals

All primary school children in Reception year, Year 1 and Year 2 in Herefordshire are entitled to Universal Infant Free School Meals.

From September 2026, the government is expanding eligibility for free school meals.
All children in households receiving Universal Credit will now be eligible for free school meals.
This means that more families may now qualify, even if you have not been eligible before.
Action required – even if your child already receives FSM
Due to changes in the rules:
  • All existing Free School Meals must be rechecked – you will need to reapply for FSM
  • Eligibility is no longer automatically protected year to year
This means:
  • You will need to reapply or provide updated information
  • If we cannot confirm eligibility, your child may no longer receive free meals
What you need to do
Please take action as soon as possible after the 1st June.
If you receive Universal Credit
  • You are likely to be eligible
  • Please apply (or reapply) for Free School Meals
If your child already receives Free School Meals
  • You must still complete a new application

If your child is in Reception to year 2, it is important that you still apply for FSM if you are on Universal credit or think you may be entitled to FSM, even though your child will receive Universal Free School Meals, as the Government are reducing the funding to schools for UIFSM.
If you are unsure
  • We strongly encourage you to apply
  • The process is quick and confidential
When to apply
  • Applications are open from 1st June 2026
  • We recommend applying as early as possible to ensure support is in place for September
Why this matters

  • A healthy meal each school day
  • Additional funding for the school to support your child’s education (if eligible under certain criteria.
Your information
